WALK ON BY – Images and impressions of the Twelfth in Ulster.
Glenwood Publications, First Floor, 316 Shankill Road, Belfast, Bt13 3AB.  2003.  ISBN 095425731 6  £2.99

SOMETIMES I think that an insight of the reviewer tells more about his review than the actual article itself.  So here’s a brief biopic of myself.

My name is Kenny Ryan, I’m a Protestant and I was born in Stirling, Scotland.  Religiously, my family background is mixed.  My Father was a Roman Catholic, though not an ardent one.  His father, my Grandfather, came from Killalla, County Mayo.

I’m a Rangers supporter.  I’m not in the Orange Order or any lodge.  However, I broadly do support the aims of the Orange Order and of Protestantism as a whole.

So what of the booklet itself?

Walk On By is a well-produced and compact publication.  If looking for an introduction to the Orange, with particular focus on the marching season in general, and the Twelfth in particular this makes excellent reading.

Giving it an aura of authenticity is the fact that unlike many publications about Ulster, it has been written by people who have either lived in or have visited the province.  Also, it is published by people who live in Ulster and who therefore have a greater insight into the situation there.

The booklet is reasonably and sensibly priced, though it would probably benefit from being a colour glossy booklet, but restrictions of a budgetary nature probably preclude this for the time being.
